A referral from a GP or other specialist doctor is only needed if you’d like to use a Medicare rebate. You may also be able to claim a private rebate for psychology services. You should contact your fund about eligibility.

Under the Better Access to Mental Health Care Initiative clients are entitled for 10 sessions per calendar year. Clients who are referred to a clinical psychologist are entitled to a medicare rebate of $141.85 per session. Clients who are referred to a registered psychologist are entitled to a medicare rebate of $96.65 per session, and clients who are referred to a mental health social worker are entitled to a medicare rebate of $85.20 per session.
